For 13 years St. Gabriel has visited local non-profits and parishioners to assist with tasks needed. Read below for FAQs about our day....
1. What is the Community Day of Service?
Our Community Day of Service is a special day when our parish comes together to go out into the community to serve others through hands-on projects for organizations and individuals in need of volunteer assistance. We have provided help to others in Lake, Geauga and Cuyahoga Counties. It’s a practical expression of our faith and love in action. This year’s Community Day is Saturday November 15.
2. Who can participate?
Everyone is welcome! Church members and non-parishioners, families, friends, and neighbors—there are opportunities for all ages and abilities to get involved.
3. Can I bring a friend?
Absolutely! This is a great way to invite someone into our community. Just be sure they sign up too so we can place them on your team of volunteers.
4. What is the schedule of the day?
Service projects are scheduled that day between 9 and 3. After going out into the local community, we return to St. Gabriel to celebrate the day together with Mass at 5pm and to have a Thank You Dinner right after the Mass in Brady Hall of the school.
5. What if I can’t commit the whole day?
No problem. Many projects have flexible time slots. If your family is only available for a few hours just indicate your availability when signing up and we are happy to accommodate.
6. What kinds of projects will we be doing?
Projects may include:
· Assisting with Organizing/Cleaning
· Helping at a local shelter or pantry
· Visiting the elderly at nursing homes
· Yard work or neighborhood clean-up
· Light handyman tasks (Exact projects may vary—see the signup sheet for options.)
7. Do I need to sign up in advance?
Yes, signing up helps us plan effectively and assign volunteers where they’re needed most. You can sign up online, or by contacting the church office beginning September 5.
8. What should I wear or bring?
T-shirts are provided to all volunteers, and you can indicate needed sizes when signing up. Depending on the work to be completed, you may want to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, you don’t mind getting a little dirty. Bring water, sunscreen, and gloves if you’re working outside. More information will be provided once you are assigned to a project, but generally other materials or tools will be provided at the location.
9. Where do we meet, and what’s the schedule?
Each group we send out to a site will have a designated Site Leader. This person will know the specifics of the tasks, where to go and when and will communicate this to the entire volunteer group. It would be fantastic if you can help by being a Site Leader. If you can, please indicate this when signing up and Thank You.
10. Why do we do this?
We serve because Jesus served. This day is about living out our faith, blessing others, and building relationships—within the church and the wider community - and Being Christ Every Day and Everywhere,
11. Who do I contact if I have questions?
Reach out to a member of the Community Day Core Team at [email protected] or contact Allison in the parish office.
